Before I travel anywhere, I like to give a quick look over the place on google maps, to get a list of vegetarian/ vegan restaurants, their reviews, directions, and any coupons they might offer. Try this search, and replace “New York” with your destination city. From this you can learn a whole lot, and do anything from planning where you’ll eat to where you might want to stay. If you’ll be in a larger city, a site like Yelp might also help.
With the help of prolific mobile phone applications, last minute search is also possible. Here are some for you:
- Happycow’s healthy dining guide is an application made for mobile devices that run the Android system. This app has the option of using your current location, via GPS, or allows user to enter an address and a radius to search within.
- There is another vegan application called VegOut that works on iPhone and iPod touch. It finds vegetarian restaurants near your location or a custom location, and it is powered by HappyCow as well.
- This iphone app VeganXpress provides the vegan choices available at many of the most popular U.S. chain restaurants. This will be especially helpful when you are on the road trip, and you want to find out the vegan food items offered at a fast-food restaurant that you can find at a nearby exit. Tip: VeganXpress also includes a full list of vegan / vegetarian beers, wine, snacks & junk foods that you may not have realized were vegan.
- I found another application for iPhone called iLocate , that lets you search and get the Vegan restaurants wherever you are, with contact info, directions, and so much more.
- VeggiePassport allows you to explain your dietary choices in more than 33 languages – this is must-have if you are an international traveler!
If you have any other application to share, please let us know.
